Born in Forest Hills, New York Dave started studying the sax in 1971 at 9 years old. His first impressionable contact with jazz was in 1974 in his junior high school big band when he saw the older musicians improvising. From that time on he started listening to, transcribing and playing jazz. His greatest influences from that time were, Charlie Parker, Sonny Stitt, John Coltrane and Michael Brecker. Also in 1974 Dave started working professionally playing school dances and private parties in his first band "Stretch and the Rubber Bands".
In 1977 Dave expanded his woodwind horizons with the flute and the clarinet. Today he is an active "doubler" on flute, alto flute, piccolo, clarinet, bass clarinet and chromatic harmonica. Also Dave has recently added oboe and English horn to his arsenal. In 1980 Dave attended St. Bonaventure University on a music scholarship and graduated in 1984 with a B.B.A. in Business Administration.
From 1984 through 1987 Dave was active in the Manhattan jazz scene fronting his own quartet and appearing with the following jazz masters: Mike Stern, Randy Brecker. Jaco Pastorius, Arnie Lawrence, Joey Calderazzo and Clem DeRosa. Also during this time Dave had the opportunity to study with David Liebman and Lawrence Feldman.

Highlights of this period are:
• 1991 through 2003 taught hundreds of private students from South America, North America, Asia, Europe and Africa.
• 1993 through 2003 recorded hundreds of jingles and CD`s with the major record companies Sony, Polygram, Warner, Continental and EMI.
• 1994 through 2001 began working with international Brazilian pop-stars, Mauricio Mattar, Fabio Junior and Zeze Carmargo & Luciano.
• 1995 through 2002 was hired as the woodwind director of the Souza Lima Conservatory of Sao Paulo.
• 1996 through 1999 gave a jazz improvisation and sax course at the Festival de Inverno at Campus do Jordao, which is the largest musical event in Latin America being held every July.
• 1997 performed a workshop together with Michael Brecker
• 1998 performed workshops together with Lee Konitz and Joe Lovano. Also that year Dave was instrumental in forming the partnership between the Souza Lima Conservatory and Berkley College of Boston.
• 1998 through 2000 received first television contract with the "Record" TV network.
• 1999 received endorsement contract with the LA Sax Company.
• 2001 through 2003 Musical director at Igreja Renascer responsible for an 80-voice choir and two big bands.
• 2004 Performed with the Temptations, Movin' Out, the Funk Filharmonic, the Gordon Lane Trio, Steve Turre, Claudio Rodite and Ritchie Canata.
• 2005 2005 Toured with Alicia Keys, performed with Paul Simon, John Meyer, Billy Joel, All Shook Up, the Big Apple Circus and Hairspray. Dave also taught his Jazz Improvisation course at various high schools.
• 2006 2006 completed his Master of Music degree at Manhattan School of Music, world tour with Michael Bolton, Jazz Improvisation teacher at Mendham High School and the Count Basie Theater. Also performed in the Broadway productions of Chita Rivera's the Dancer's Life, The Wedding Singer and Hot feet. Formed his own jazz/funk group "The Dave Richards Connection" which is currently performing worldwide.
• 2007 2007 Starting in January 2007 Dave will performing the musical "In The Heights" which features him on baritone, tenor and alto saxophones and flute and piccolo
Over the years, Dave, as a performing artist, composer, arranger and teacher, has participated in numerous jazz festivals in Brazil, the US, Europe and Africa and has fronted many groups of diverse instrumentation and musical styles.
